First let me say thanks to all the posters current and past for all the usefull input over the years !!!!!!
I am the original owner of a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo sedan with 74K miles.
I have been unsatisfied with the ride qualities of the oem suspension for some time.
I was really concerned in selecting front struts not to get too firm a ride ( bone jarring, teeth shattering). I had narrowed my selection to either the Koni Sport Adjustables or the Bilstein HD's.
I liked the fact that the Koni's were adjustable (a simple turn of a knob).
I chose the Koni's.
I ordered the Koni Sport Struts from Tirerack in Tuesday and they were delivered the very next day by ground upd (Shreveport LA to Houston TX). Cudos to Tirerack for getting the right parts to me right fast ! Incidently, the Koni's struts come packaged in a bright red box with all the stuff and adjustment knob and even a slick decal - nice package Koni! Compared to others, Tireracks price was very good!
Friday afternoon I was set to do the install myself when I encountered torn outer CV boots on both axles. Knowing my limitations (i.e. patience) I called my favorite Volvo Indy and took the car to him late Friday pm. He overhauled both front axles( some of the bearing were shot) and replaced all the boots (inner and outer) ; replaced the struts tie arms (name ?) ; and replaced all 3 motor mounts which were visibly shot.
Since he had the car apart I had him install the Koni Sport Struts at a relatively nominal cost.
The spring seats on both side were replaced as well.
Now the scoop on the Koni Sport Adjustable Struts:
I intially set the Koni's the softest setting and the ride was great - not too firm at all! In fact I have already turned them a 1/2 turn to the firmer and the ride is absolutely an improvement over OEM.
At this early point of my evaluation I can confidently state that the Koni Sports aren't too firm - they enhance the feel on the front end. Firm and softare very subjective - but to me the firmness the koni's provide enhance the 850's ride and feel "right".
I am still debating whether to install Koni Sports or Bilsteins HD's for the rear shocks. However, based on my experience so far on the front, I wouldn't hesitate to go Koni on all 4 wheels.
If ya'll have an interest, I will continue to share my experiences with the new Koni's as well as my decision on the rear shocks.
