I have relied on the computer in my '95 854T to accurately track the average MPG and have found it to be close to my calculations with pen and paper during random checks. Since purchasing this vehicle used about five years ago I have consistently averaged around 19.7 MPG for a variety of driving, but mostly local trips with some highway thrown in for variety. It may go up to as high as 20.2 or as low as 19.5, but over time it seems to settle around 19.7. The only time that I reset the computer is before a long trip, the last time being about six months ago.
You can imagine my surprise, however, when I noticed that the MPG had dropped to around 17.1. I immediately reset the computer and after a tank of gas and regular driving found that the new average is now 16.9. I keep the car well-maintained and routinely serviced and am wondering what could have caused such a severe (and sudden) drop in gas mileage.
Thanks in advance for the advice. Would prefer direct response via e-mail to kozikowski@mac.com.
Cheers,
TJ
