For the record:
I bought the car 1 year-old with 36k on it.
In three years (and 40k miles) that I've owned it:
1. ECU failure (sunroof opened by itself and close button stopped working) - warranty repair
2. leather on drivers door pealed away from backing - warranty
3. failed A/C evaporator - $1000
4. failed fuel injector - $1000 (mainly due to the amount of shop time required to trace the 'hard starting' to the injector)
5. failed air pump - $350 (replaced air pump, relay, and SAS valve using procedure on volvospeed.com) Shop's wanted $750+
6. rear hatch panel gradually fell apart - $100
7. just replaced tires for the 2nd time (I susupect the OEM MXV4's just don't last very long?) I've had a couple alignments done, but car was always in spec) about $500/set
8. Windshield washer 'squirters'; 90% of pressue went to headlights and 10% went to windshield. After 5 trips to dealer, finally paid a different shop to disconnect the headlight squirters so my windshield squirters would work. Annapolis Volvo just kept telling me to bring it in, but never fixed anything. - $50
That's well over $3000 in repairs in 3 years + way too much time in the shop. (I also have to facture the pain involoved with having my wife and 3 kids take me back and forth to the shops...) I've started doing the repairs myself, because I don't feel like donated so much $ to the car repair industry.
I love the car when it's running, and I find it very comfortable (which was one of the main reasons I got it). I obviously would be unable to recommend this car to any one who is looking for dependable transportation. I also can't believe Volvo won't provide some sort of $ assistance for the A/C evaporator or air pump issues.
