car shopping: S70 contemplation S70 1998

Hi all,

I located an S70 here in town. It's a 1998 non-turbo, 5 speed manual, with gray cloth interior. Plastic hubcaps. Really the base model I assume.

71k miles. Looks basically like new.

They are asking $9885 which is below retail, and below street price according to kbb.com

But this seems high, compared to what the nicer s70s are going for around the country on ebay. 12k dollars for a similar mileage T5 is not uncommon.

What do you guys think is a fair price for this car? It's in central Iowa. Volvos are not terribly common, or popular at dealerships in this town.

I test drove it and like: the quiet ride, the soft seats, the manual transmission.

I think the S70 seems like a great choice, being that most people think they are ugly, and this keeps the price reasonable, for the amount of car you are purchasing. (and thanks to the S80/S60, even volvophiles have prettier options)

So, this post is just to get an idea of what kind of S70 to look for?

Is the manual tranny reliable? What are the achilles heels of these cars. The only Volvos I'm familiar with are the 2 series. And the b21-b230f engines.

5 cylinder, front driven scares me.. But at the same time, this car is quiet, and the seats make me feel like I'm sitting in my recliner at home.

I don't want leather, and I don't want an automatic tranny. Is this particular car about the only one I will ever see in this trim package? (all the ones I have seen are automatics with leather interior)

Thanks for any info about the car, and what to check, if I decide to investigate further (the engine, etc)

Thanks,

Luke
