1998 V70R Wagon rear "clunk"

Yikes! I just bought a 1998 V70R wagon with 81,000 miles. After driving it for about a week I noticed that it makes a hard "thunk" in the rear end when I get to a cruising speed over 50mph. It only does it once, and doesn't do it agian unless I drop my speed to almost a stop and then accelerate back up to the 50+ range.

Yesterday I took it to an independent, and the only thing he could find was a missing cv boot on the front of the driveline. He called a volvo dealer
and they thought it was the "vicious coupling", but had not heard of the symptom that I have had. My mechanic suggested driving it until it has more symptoms. He thought that he could remove the driveline if we don't want to go to the expense of replacing the VC.

Will anything be damaged by continuing to drive the car as is? I have no other problems with it. Has anyone else experience the "clunk" in the rear? I am hoping it is not the vc, but it seems there is really no way to tell if that is what is causing it.
Also found out that to replace the cv boot I have to replace the complete driveline.
After the visit to the mechanic I went online and found this site. I wish I had known about it before I bought the car, but I really like my car!

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Musiclady
