The heating and cooling system on my 1997 850 GLT (100,000 miles) has gone berserk (a word which Webster's defines as not only "frenzied" or "crazed," but also as "an ancient **Scandinavian** warrior frenzied in battle and held to be invulnerable," which pretty well describes my 1991 940 Turbo and 1997 850 GLT right now). Here are the symptoms:
1) My "check engine" light has been on for several months. The Diagnostic Trouble Codes and Definitions are P0116 (Engine Coolant Temp CKT Range/Perf) and P0455 (EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Large)).
2) I replaced my original thermostat a month ago with a NAPA thermostat. The original thermostat had been stuck on open.
3) My engine cooling fan turns on as soon as I turn on the ignition (even before I start the engine), stays on continuously while I'm driving the car, and doesn't turn off until 3-4 minutes after I turn off the ignition (actually, today when I drove the car home the fan turned off as soon as I turned off the ignition, so this is apparently an intermittent problem). It's a two-speed fan, and it runs at the lower speed when I turn on the ignition, then seems to go to the high speed when the engine is turned on, and then seems to slow down to the lower speed after the engine is turned off. I checked the engine cooling fan relay and it is working properly. I have had this problem since before I changed my thermostat.
4) The "REC" and "AC OFF" lights on my Electronic Climate Control **intermittently** blink for 20 seconds or so when I first turn on the car. My manual says that this indicates a fault in the ECC if it happens once and recurs the next time the system is switched on.
5) The air conditioning system does not blow much cold air.
6) About a week ago the car would occasionally not start right away if I drove it and then let it sit for less than 30 minutes before trying to start it again.
7) A few days ago the car apparently overheated and blew coolant out of the overflow tank and the radiator. The coolant indicator light came on and I had to add coolant and water to the overflow tank. I now have an intermittent radiator leak.
8) Prior to the car overheating a few days ago, the temperature gauge never reached the midway point, staying closer to the 1/4 point on the gauge. Now it tends to stay just below the halfway point, but sometimes quickly shoots up into the red zone. When this happens, I turn the engine off but leave the ignition on so I can watch the temperature gauge. It just stays in the red zone, but when I start the car up again after a few minutes, it drops back to just below the midpoint. The coolant overflow tank is between the MIN and MAX point when this happens.
Are some or all of these symptoms related? Does anyone have any ideas on where to begin on any of these? Thanks, as always, for your ideas and suggestions.
