'93 850 Oil Capacity

My son has recently purchased a '93 850. When we checked the oil there was no indication on the dipstick, so we changed it, adding the 5.6 quarts recommended in the Owner's Manual. Still no oil on dipstick.

I see in Volvo literature offerings there is a bulletin about oil capacity, but haven't purchased it yet. Is the 5.6 quarts listed in the owner's manual a typo and there is really some better (correct) figure? Or do I have (shudder) dipstick problem?
