airconditioner door 850

had the passenger knee guard off today looking up behind the air conditioner and noticed a rod hanging down with a plastic connector on the end. with a mirror i can see a door with the other part of the plastic connector still attached to the shaft of the door. And it is screwed to the end of the shaft.
What is the door for? Fresh air, or distribution? anyway to get to shaft easily without having to remove the air conditioner? anybody been there, done that?? rest of ac works great. never missed whatever is broken.
