AIRBAG EXPLOSION 850T

HELP!! Has this ever happened to anyone before?

My Wife sat behind the steering wheel, placed the key into the ignition, turned it and BANG!! both Airbags exploded. The car (1996 850T) was not being driven and had not been driven for about 3 hours prior to the incident. The car has never been in any sort of accident.

Can anyone give me some answers.

Volvo has been silent on this one.
