manual transmission problem 850 1994

Dear readers,
my wife's 855 GLT (90,000 mls) developed a misbehaviour recently. While decelerating, the second gear 'pops' out sometimes, leaving the transmission in neutral. This happens mostly when driving downhill.
Otherwise the transmission is very smooth, nothing wrong.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of trouble? Can this be repaired without removal of the tranny?
