Potential A/C trouble?? 850 1995

Heh everyone!
I have a question for anyone with former A/C experience. I was driving home in heavy traffic last evening on the first real muggy, hot day here and of course had the A/C cranked. For some reason, unknown to me, all of a sudden a low, whistling type sound emitted from the center dash area and then I got a magic show when a foggy mist began blowing out of the vent. The cold temperature also briefly dropped off and it got much warmer. I shut the A/C off and proceeded the rest of the way home with the windows down. I tried it again later in the evening and it seemed like it was O.K. Any idea what I am experiencing here?
