Problems with A/C recharge 850

I've read many threads and advices from this board regarding getting one's A/c going. So, I bought the Walmart gauge and it read green before trying to put in 14 oz of EZ Charge of refrigerant, oil with leak sealant. I even wired the switch so that the compressor would stay on. It seemed to be going well for about 8 oz when nothing seemed to be going in. I took it off and put on the gauge and it read in the RED! Obviously, I quit! does anyone know what's happening? Why would it go from green to red within 8 oz? BTW, i still don't get a bit cool inside. thanks for help. it's hot in chicago nowadays!
