Cleaning Chalky Oxide Resides/Aluminum Engine Parts

My 1999 S70 Spent its first two years on the East Coast, where it was exposed to road salts. This left the aluminum engine, parts, and other metal surfaces a little chalky with oxidation. Thank God no iron rust though. Are there any easy ways (e.g., spray on cleaners) that will safely remove this stuff. It's unsightly, and being from California, I'm not used to seeing this in my engine bay. All advise is welcome. Thanks.
