is there any setting which would cause the front dome light in an 855 to not work when the door is opened?

the floor area lights work, and the dome light works if turned on at the switch by the rearview, but when the switch is set to the door point, no response. Did I miss something in the owner's manual?
should we just get the assembly replaced?
