starter sounds like its grinding a sardine can !!! 850 1996

first symptom showed up the other morning. i cranked the engine to go to work. it turned. i released the key and heard the (starter?) whirr for another couple of seconds, then this clanking noise like something is loose in there.
do i have a bad starter or something else?
anyone had any experience like this?
