Reduced Performance and backfire into exhaust V70-XC70 2003

I have a 2003 XC70 with 175k miles on it. On the highway, if I dip into the throttle enough to prompt a downshift the car will stumble, backfire, and display the Reduced Engine Performance message. The message will disappear within ten seconds and does not bring on the check engine light. Fuel economy seems low. Plugs are new, new breather trap and plumbing, and runs well otherwise.

Any suggestions? Thank you!
