Adaptive lambda control 1990

posted by  someone claiming to be Adaptive lambda control is too rich. Where's it located on  Sat Aug 5 13:03 CST 2017 [RELATED]

I have a 1990 740GL and I'm getting a code that reads Adaptive Lambda Control is too rich or too lean. Can someone explain this to me. I think it must be too rich because when it's idling black smoke comes from the exhaust.
