I came back to my car in the mall and the car started and chugged at low RPM
stepping on the gas did nothing. Finally the engine wouldn't run at all.
I could hear the fuel pump running! But so what?
But that doesn't mean that there's an impeller spinning, or even there.
The next move is to check fuel at the rail at the Shraeder valve and there was
zero fuel. No fuel at the rail and the pump motor is working.
(BUT NOT PUMPING) I got a tow home, Thank you Geico!
Then I found a fuel pump online for $35 and that was it.
(I wonder what dealers get to replace a fuel pump?)
some notes about changing the Fuel Pump:
*remove the trunk floor panel and right trunk side lining
fold the passenger side rear seat back forward to remove the big stud that locks the seat (Torx-30 bit), also a 10MM nut.
* I used a 1/4" drive with a 10MM socket for the nuts on the fuel pump cover
* pry off the two couplings with the hoses from the pump, I used a short pry bar and it was OK, (but maybe there's a better way?)
* The next step is a PIA, but easy with Klaus's method, Thanks Klaus!
You need to remove the large locking ring that holds the pump to the tank.
use pliers handles set into the notches in the locking ring (I used channel locks) hold them in tight to the lock ring and use a big adjustable wrench on the pliers to turn.
* Then it's a straightforward swap and reassembly
On reassembly press the hose couplings firmly on the pump fittings,
be sure they are seated all the way down
I suggest testing the pump before replacing the cover to make sure it isn't leaking. Use a couple of tie-wraps on the harness at the pump before bolting up the nuts.
The hardest part was cleaning all the junk out of the trunk first.
