What does the circlip on clutch slave do - as I loosed mine and not eager to go back 850 1995

Well I want to grease the slave shaft end and fork ball as they creak. So I want the shaft backed out to add grease. From above it looked like I just need to pop off the circlip and having worked with cable clutches I figured there would be some free play (i.e. no tension anywhere). Then slide the slave towards the car center.

But the slave to did free up to be moved away from the clutch fork and now I want go back to BEFORE but the circlip does not want to fully reseat. After more examination it looks like the slave my be bolted into place (into block) by using mirror to look under the slave. That could be good as it might mean that my now 75 contact circlip doesn't do much. Or maybe that bolt has nothing to do with the slave.

Here is the photo, but I described it if you don't like photos.
