exhaust leak 850

I purchased a new CAT and the rest of the exhaust new a few years ago. I bought a Volvo gasket for the manifold to CAT- its just two pieces of thin aluminum with some other material inside. The shop smeared orange silicone on both sides it looks like. Anyway- just wondering if anyone knew this was standard practice. I can smell exhaust when the windows are open, but I can't see it and there are no noises. Strange.
