Switch, Turn signal : Sporadic V70-XC70 2006

V70 06 Wagon
The turn signal has been on the blink (LOL) working on/off on occasions the past few months during the colder weather. Is there a way to trouble shoot it the switch turn signal, if I do remove it before buying a new one.

NOTE: I would like to state that I do have a few wires(interior rear dome etc.) that have been severed in the cable harness leading to the tailgate. I re-installed the harness temporary (With most everything working) till the weather gets better to fix/replace the rear cable harness correctly.
could the problem in the switch malfunction also be coming from the same harness?
