I do not have air impact tools, the preferred method. Read one guy used two long bolts in the smaller holes on the pulley, placed screwdriver between them and allowed screwdriver to wedge on frame; this method did not come highly recommended.
I tried locking up the camshafts with the special tool, and this allowed me to remove the 10mm hex bolts; but when I attempted the 30mm nut, something "snapped". I freaked, of course; immediately removed the camshaft lock and cycled clockwise a few times, and everything looks and SEEMS ok, no noises at least. (Any ideas what the "snap" may have been? I knew I'd be placing alot of extra stress on the belt with this method, but I'm replacing it anyway; maybe the belt skipped a tooth?)
Seems some are saying to leave the serpentine pulley ON, that the timing belt can still be replaced (with greater difficulty). BUT I want to see the crank alignment marks when I get this thing back together, and that is hard to do with the pulley in the way. I want to get the pulley OFF.
Besides belt, tensioner, and idler replacement, I've got an oil leak to address. Lots of oil inside the timing belt case, seems to be more on the exhaust cam side. Exhaust VVT has on the order of .100" end play (intake VVT is approx .030"). I'm also ready to replace the shaft seals if necessary.
One more thing. When I lined up the cam pulley tooth marks with the cover slots, the slots on the rear end of the shafts were not horizontal as I expected; they were both off horizontal by 10 degrees or so. I'm thinking the correct method of reinstall is: Lock camshafts with shaft slots horizontal; adjust crank pulley slightly (if necessary) to line up marks; advance VVT's/pulleys to clockwise limit while lining up pulley marks with slots in cover, and tighten VVT's; replace belt while holding pulleys at clockwise limit.
To summarize, here are my questions:
1. How to remove 30mm nut without air impact tools?
2. Snap noise when I attempted to loosen nut?
3. Install procedure correct?
I appreciate responses to any or all of these questions.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.
