Low fuel light sensor problem V70-XC70 2001

On a long trip in the middle of nowhere recently, I noticed that the low fuel warning didn't come on as the gas guage approached empty. When I finally gassed up, the tank took about 18 gallons(!). Volvo said they have to drop the gas tank to replace the low fuel sensor, even though the gas guage is working ok. Does this sound right and has anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance!

- John
