CD Changer Woes..what would you do? 850 1996

Hey,

My CD changer is giving me headaches!!! Starting last week, my changer (factory 6-disc unit, 811 head) gave me an EEEE message then dropped-off line. I was driving through the mountains at the time, with large fluctuation of temp/dewpoint, and I intiallly thought it was moisture that gave me the error. I turned off the radio, and waited an hour before trying again, and it worked fine. Then, today, my CD went out again. I mean nothing, I can't even select it from my head unit. Here's my symptoms:

1) It originally happened when I deselected the Tape function (which I hardly ever use)

2) The changer makes a cycling sound once per second, like it was trying to load a disc, whenever the car is on or acc, whether the radio is on or not.

3) You can still eject and load the disc cassette, even while its making these cycles.

4) I've removed the changer from its brackets, examined the connections, they're ok, just minor grime on the exterior, connections look ok, and re-installed..the unit worked again, until I selected the radio function, then it was back to nothing, plus the cycling sound, again. No EEEE, just the freq. display, as if the head dosen't even recognize the changer.

5) Since removing power to the changer didn't seem to work, I've currently disconnected the battery, thinking that completely removing power may reset this problem.

6) There dosen't appear to be any jamming of the mechanism inside the changer...as I said, it accepted the CD Cassette and played after removal of power, however briefly.

What does the collective Brickboard Brain Trust think happened? And what else could I/should I try?

Thanks for your help,

Sean
