850 odd A/C noise @ 2000 RPM 850 1995

My wife's 1995 850 has an interesting symptom. At about 2000 RPM, with the A/C on, there is a momentary whine - not unlike the sound of a the fuel pump in my 1800es, though quieter and from under the hood. This happens only when the car is in motion - not stationary. I put the car in neutral while underway to test it, and it happened then too. Didn't try reverse. Or Park ;-)

She had some major A/C work done a couple of years ago (the evaporator, which usually conks out at 51000 miles when the warranty is up). The car now has 81000 or so.

The A/C blows cold enough, we think.

Any thoughts on what to look for would be welcome. Our mechanic doesn't have any ideas (over the phone, he hasn't heard the noise yet), and we'll have him check it out soon. Thanks,
