Hello All,
I have a 1999 XC with about 155,000 miles on it. Approximately a month ago I started to hear a strange noise coming from one of the rear wheels (I think?). Each morning I back my car down my driveway on to the street. I then put my car into "Drive" and drive forward. Approximately 5 car lengths later I hear a noise coming from one of the rear wheels that sounds like "mechanical spring" suddenly releasing, almost like a "thud" or as if you ran something over. When I park my car at night, I do not apply the emergency brake, so I don' t have to release it in the morning when I drive off. I'm also pretty sure that I will still hear this ""thud" even if I park my car the night before pointing down the driveway, where I don't have to back up and then put the car into "Drive".
Once I hear this noise in the morning, it does not repeat itself the rest of the day. As I said, the sound makes me think of a heavy duty mechanical spring suddenly being released. My hope is this is a problem that others have experienced. Thanks to all who reply.
Hugh
