Am I burning ATF Fluid? V70-XC70 1999

Hello All,

I have a 1999 V70 AWD XC with 153,000 miles. I purchased the car used with 12,000 miles back in 1999 and have maintained it since. Just today when I started it, a large amount of smoke came out of the exhaust. Dark colored smoke, like a cloud enveloped the rear of the car. The car had been parked for several hours out in the cold before I started it. I drove it for a mile or two and the smoke dissipated. I got out of the car with the engine running. By now the exhaust smoke was typical for a cold winter day. But I think I can smell some sort of burning oil, possibly ATF fluid. I checked the ATF fluid level and it was fine. There was no evidence of an ATF leak. The ATF is changed every two years.

Is it possible the engine is sucking ATF into the exhaust system and that is what I am seeing coming out of the exhaust pipe? The car runs fine and there is no "Check Engine" light on. Thanks in advance to all who reply.

Hugh
