Tailgate lift shock absorber replacement 850 94

My tailgate lift lost it's oomph and the tailgate keeps whacking me in the head. Has anyone had any experience replacing one or can you point me in the right direction? I've seen the replacements for around $30, so I figured it would be easier to install myself than pay a repair shop.
