Break wear indicators V70-XC70 1999

I've been told (by the Volvo dealer) that the Volvo brakes are shot after 25,000 miles (seems hard to believe) and they go without warning. Is it true that there are no brake wear indicators? Or is the dealer just trying to get me to pay for new brake pads even though I don't need them?
