The 99 T V70 wagon I bought with about 100K on it three years ago and now has 135K has been using about a quart of oil in 2500 miles or so. (I change at 5 K even though they have extended it to 7,500K on the '99 V70 as opposed to the 5K on the850--Mobil 1 10-30 synthetic). The oil is very dirty at this time, indicating to me that the rings are worn and it is getting blow by.
It has always had a habit of occasionally slight spattering carbon/oil on the garage floor and door on startup occasionally, which I attributed to an overly rich mixture at at startup (no smoke).
But last summer pulling onto the freeway to climb out of the Columbia River Gorge in 105 degree heat, a valve burned out on #2 cylinder. I drove on another 150 miles to Seattle where the miss was diagnosed as a burned valve, then back home 300 miles at reduced speeds and avoiding turbo use. Oil consumption shot up. (Engine never overheated).
A new valve was installed by a shop, with no other damage detected. But now it is using about a quart in 300 miles. I went to about 50% Mobil1 10-40 and that slowed it a bit. But the volume of the splattering of carbon/oil on the garage floor has increased.
The compression was checked at the shop on #1 cylinder, which had started missing apparently due to a new faulty plug, and it was #175#, indicating compression is okay, though I don't think all cylinders were checked.;
I have concluded that the oil seal in the turbo is probably bad and the oil is blowing by it. None of the rest of the engine shows any signs of oil leakage,
Turbo runs strong. Am I right in concluding that the turbo oil seal is blown?
