BACK STORY: In '09, when a CEL appeared (and threw the same P0455 code), I had the dealer do a smoke test, and the roll-over valve (behind the petrol tank) was cracked-as well as a few lines going to the fuel pump. The dealer installed the necessary parts, and the 850 was on its way.
PRESENT DAY: My parents' '96 850 has had an intermittent CEL (P0455) for the past few months, and I have been trying to track down the cause.
I have (over the past few months) been looking over the lines-as well as the gas cap, and purge valve (which sits on the radiator fan shroud, to see if anything looked amiss. Yesterday, my father told me the CEL was back on, and I confirmed it to be the P0455 code.
Having already looked over the rest of the system, I took my mirror and looked at the top of the charcoal canister. True to form, the hose (944075-1) coming off the EVAP canister shut off valve (which sits on the other side of the left fender)was badly split at the charcoal canister.
I pulled the hose off (at the canister), cut back above the split, and tried to reinstall the hose. Of course, now the hose was too short. I went to the Volvo dealer, and picked up a new hose (because, at that point, I hadn't looked at VADIS to see where exactly the hose went)-as well as a hard plastic coupler (in case I couldn't get to the other end of the hose, and needed to rig something).
When I returned, I immediately realized that I would need to remove the fender liner if I wanted to replace the hose. Instead, I used the coupler and connected the hose end (that already had been cut to remove the split), and then cut a piece off the new hose (944075) which I had just purchased.
I reconnected the hose to the charcoal canister, and took the 850 on a test drive. The car ran brilliantly for the thirty miles, and I will keep an eye on it for the next couple of weeks.
My question is: Should I now leave it alone, or would it be preferable to go back (remove the fender liner) and install the entire hose?
I do apologize for the long winded nature of this post, and I hope that everyone has a most brilliant Sunday!
