Check engine light and Air Pumps... 850 1996

Hello All:

The check engine light came on in our 96 850 glt, 60,000 miles. Dealer says it need an air pump, valve and relay, $622.00 installed. This was determined by the error code diagnostic readout. How can I determine that the air pump is bad. Even if it is will it harm anything, like oxygen sensor operation ..It just sounds like alot for an air pump.. How hard is replacement of an air pump on a 850 ??
