Hello :)
I have a 2005 s40 T5 - FWD. I was at my dad's house the other night and I parked at the top of his driveway which is a pretty steep hill. I had a brief moment where I questioned if it was a good idea and I guess I should have listened to that! I put the car in 2nd gear (bad idea??) and also put the parking brake on so I thought I was probably OK. Anyway, probably 20ish minutes later a man came running up the hill yelling about my car and I ran outside to find that it had rolled backwards down the hill and out into a very (busy!) main road. It was basically sitting in the lane and cars were whizzing around it. Not good! I made sure when I hopped in to move it that I did indeed have it in gear and yes it was and the brake was still engaged as well.
I tried to see if the car would roll in 2nd gear on a smaller hill and it does seem to move a bit, but I haven't tried it on a steep incline again.
My question then is why would this happen? I always thought putting a car in gear was the way to keep it from rolling (and using the brake). So, is it normal for it to roll in 2nd gear if it's on a steep hill? I'm also guessing my e-brake isn't functioning the way it should be.
Any thoughts would be grand. Thanks!
