driveshaft u-joint replacement 1997 850 AWD 850 1997

I need to replace the universal joint (u-joint) of the drive shaft. It is one mid-way in the shaft between the manual 5 speed transmision and the rear differential. Volvo says that the u-joint is not serviceable and that the drive shaft must be replaced in its entirety. Has anyone replaced the u-joint only? Who can supply the universal joint part? Special tools required for removal?
