Parking brake actuation hardware V70-XC70

Hello, A few days ago a friend and I changed the parking brake shoes in my 2002 V70 base. The old shoes had to be original. Three had no lining at all and one was OK looking. There was absolutely no braking action. The amount of dust trapped back there was amazing. I had read that a claw and adjuster (with star wheel) were available for retrofit. My car had a simple, two piece, lever device which pushed the shoes apart when pulled by the cable. Adjustment afterward was a breeze from the 10 mm nut at the handle. I assume the retrofit option was for the other side of the shoes, where the one piece, stationary spreader lives. Is there a marked benefit to having the "claw and adjuster"? To put it another way; is the system I have deficient or otherwise half baked? Any info is welcome. Kira
