VIN anomoly S40-V40

Getting ready for a transmission fluid change. I'm not trying to get into the Dex III vs. 3909 discussion. That's been beaten to death.

Since we have a 2001 NA model, - a transition year -, I decided to verify which automatic transmission (4sp or 5sp) by looking up my VIN.
The 9th character of the VIN is the gearbox and it is a "2" which decodes as a M56 manual.
From what I've found on the internet, that 9th character should be a "6" or a "9" for an automatic.
I know the original owner of this car and am certain it was delivered with an automatic.
Strange huh?
