BMW oil change "interval" 850 all

Another data point in the lifelong debate on oil changes. The February Car and Driver has a long-term test report on a 1999 BMW 328. According to the article BMWs calculate service intervals based on number of starts, engine speed, coolant temp, trip length, etc., instead of just relying on mileage. In the test car the computer decided the first oil change was needed at 18,441 miles.

Many of us would have gone through a half dozen filters and a barrel of oil by then.
