96 850 wagon rear end sag, excess wear on inside of rear tires 850

went for tire rotation yesterday and shop said they couldn't do it due to excess wear on inside of tires on the rear.

took the car to a guy who does a lot of work on volvos and he suggested if tire discounters was any good they would have told me the rear end of the wagon was sagging and they would have told me what needed done to fix it instead of just trying to sell me two new tires.

maybe twice a year i put around 500 pounds of stuff in the rear, but only one person is in the car when i do this. normally the max in the rear is 250-275 pounds for 100-150 miles of travel no more than once a week. the shocks were replaced a couple of years ago and there is no clunking or noise one would expect from spent rear shocks.

any thoughts would be appreciated. and, no, tire discounters didn't suggest the vehicle needed a four wheel alignment, just two new rear tires.

thx in advance for your help!
