Climate Control Panel (ECC) Question: 850

In my parents' '96 850, the recycle and a/c buttons flash seventeen times before turning off.

Knowing that this indicates codes are being stored in the panel, I had a look at VADIS to see how one could read the codes. As far as I can see (from VADIS), the way to read the codes are from the back OBDI style diagnostic system.

Is this the best/only way to read the codes? Will the dealer scan tool also read the codes, or will they just pull the panel to read the codes?
