Alternator/Battery C70

The battery in my wife's '03 C70 recently went kaput. I had not seen under the hood until the battery went dead a couple of times. The battery was about 2 years old. When I finally took a look, 2 cells were way low on water, plates were visible. There was white residue around the battery area as far as a foot away, presumably from the lost electrolyte. She took the car to Sears and got a replacement since it was within the replacement warranty time period. While things seem ok, there was some corrosion on the + terminal after only a couple of months. Sears had applied some grease which I removed and coated with CRC terminal spray. My concern is what caused the original boil over. One thought is that the alternator is overcharging. My basic question is whether this would trigger some sort of "error/warning" from the ECU? I haven't run any kind of alternator test in a very long time. I was surprised that Sears didn't run some sort of test as part of the replacement. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Is wait and watch the best approach? Thanks.
