I just picked up an older 850 with what might be an evaporator issue. The PO said the AC held a charge for 9 months before needing a charge. Now it doesn't hold for more than a few days. Is this always the evaporator? I bought the car with the repair figured into the cost so I'm OK either way. I just want to know what to look for before taking this car in for the repair. Can it not be the evaporator and instead be a hose that is causing the refrigerant to escape? Are there any areas I should look for?
Also, what is the range of the evaporator repair cost? I have heard $1000 is the ball park number. My dealer offers Volvo Club members 10% discount so it helps if the costs are roughly the same for the dealer and indy shops.
