No power to wheels, tranny problem? 850

The car used to take off when the gas was pressed but now when the gas is pressed, the car slowly picks up speed. The rpm gauge almost red lines before the car changes gears. When it does change gears, it is very rough and jerky, and then it is slow to speed up again.

A friend of mine was revving the engine (in neutral) shortly before the lack of power to the wheels began. Any help or ideas would be great.
