Hum from right front axle 850 1996

My 1996 855T has developed a hum from the front left axle which starts when the car is doing about 30 mph. The Volvo dealer told me that the hub has gone bad and needs to be replaced. That really doesn't sound right to me -- I would expect a bearing but the hub seems like something that shouldn't go bad.

Has anyone else had this type of problem?
