abs brakes- 5 speed transmission-winter S70 1998

I've never had abs brakes before. I just bought a S70 T5 with 5 speed transmission and abs brakes. Last night I hit some ice on the extreamely steep hill on the road where I live. I've always put the car in 1st and pumped my way down. I knew not to pump, so I pounded instead, holding my foot on the brake. Well, I stalled. Of course. Neutral seems like a mistake. How do you go very slowly down a steep hill, with an s curve, on ice with abs brakes and a standard tranmission?
