Had the muffler assembly replaced and then ... S70

Hi all,

The muffler assembly was replaced yesterday. The tailpipe was hanging (hanger had rusted) and looking underneath, the pipe was disconnected from the flange (before the cat). The car was really loud. The Volvo shop installed a new muffler assembly.

When they started the car, it was still a bit noisy. The shop said I will need a new cat converter and exhaust manifold soon ($$$$). I drove home and put the car on a ramp. I noticed that there was a crack on the converter. See attached photos. Was this due to normal weak and tear?

My wife's 1998 S70 (red) has roughly only 70k miles and is our winter car.
