high rpm's at start and rpm's don't come down when gas petal is released. 850

When I started the car, the car would rev to about 2500 - 3000 rpm's for a few seconds then settled at about 1000 with a rough idle. While still in park, I gave the car gas til about 3500 rpm's and released the pedal and the engine continued to rev at 3500. It wouldn't come down after about 10 seconds so I tuned off the engine. Now it won't start at all.

Any input would be a great help.
