I removed my air pump on my '97 850 a few weeks ago and as expected it was full of water. The relay down below was completely destroyed also. More fun.
I removed the vacuum operated shutoff valve. I found that the valve is still functional. So I now have a few questions:
1. The pump relay appears to be just a simple DC relay, not a cheap relay, but simple. It looks like when the ECU grounds the coil, the pump runs. So I don't see why I need to buy the expensive Volvo relay. Correct? I can just wire in a cheap Bosch SPDT 12 VDC relay?
2. Should the valve have vacuum on it all the time, or is the vacuum applied when the air injection pump is running? I need to trouble shoot the valve, because when I had it off the car it appeared to work properly. I think vacuum is applied to opens the valve, allowing the pump to inject air, but maybe I have this logic reversed?
Any help would be appreciated. I need to pass emissions test soon....
