control arm installation not going well V70-XC70 2000

I am experiencing great difficulty in replacing the control arms in my 2000 xc70. They are the four bolt variety. It took me the better part of a day to get the bolts aligned through the subframe. Now I can't get the ball joint to go all of the way into its socked. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
