Tip for Radiator Removal - top bolts 850

I tried to add this to the post from lucast titled "Radiator replacement tips for RHD 850 T-5 850 1994", but for some reason I could not do it. It's a very helpful post, and the link lucast lists in that article http://volvospeed.com/Repair/Radiator850turbo.php, is a must read before doing a radiator removal.

In the volvospeed document the guy writes "From the front of the car, look between the headlight and the condensor, you will see two 10mm bolts, you need to remove the top bolt only. I use 1/4 inch drive, with a swivel 10mm and a six inch extension." Good luck with this. The access is very tight and the bolt head is right up against the side of the radiator fins.

If you don't have the tools, or even if you do, it's difficult to gain access to the 10mm bolt head. I tried a bunch of different combinations and could not get to it. My final solution was to take out the headlights and drill a hole into the plastic cover in front of the bolt head.

To do this, remove the plastic guard at the bottom of the headlight (carefully, just retaining clips but if you pull too hard you can snap it). Remove the hood latching mechanism behind the headlight (just 2 bolts 13mm I think), then remove the 3 bolts holding in the headlight assembly. Find the location of the bolt head behind the plastic recess for the headlight and then drill a hole in the plastic large enough to insert your socket. Viola, you have straight-in access for the removal and the subsequent re-installation.

When you put the headlight assembly back in it completely covers the hole, so there's no cosmetic damage either. This process takes 5 minutes to do both sides and is a lot less aggravating than trying to get the socket on the head as described in the volvospeed process. Wish I had thought of it first.

Hope this helps someone
