1993 Volvo 850 stalled and will not start, not even cough
Observations:
General:
I am getting no codes(1-1-1) for both A2 and A6. The IAC valve is buzzing.
The car had a rough idle. It stalled at very low engine and ground speed after
having run well for about 2 miles.
Electrical
1. There is yellow-orange sparks at all plugs when grounded against engine.
2. The wiring order is correct : 1-2-4-5-3 . The tallest post on distributor
has wire #1 which is from cylinder nearest the passenger side. Viewed from
driver side the order goes CCW around the distributor.
3. The Timing belt was replaced last summer.
4. the Distributor to Coil wire had approx 2500 ohms. It has just now been replaced
with the same form well performing s70 having 2200ohms . The distributor
cap has been replace since stall. The rotor looked fine, and had very low resistance.
5. Still no start when coil from working 98 s70 swapped in.
Fuel
1. There is 43 psi at fuel rail. Pressure rises very quickly when ignition is turned on.
2. If I remove the plugs and crank there is a slight odor or gasoline. If I insert a twist
of paper towel into a plug hole it does not become wet.
3. Noid light flashes when engine cranks. It appears to flash less than once per rev.
4. Main Fuel Injector Relay opens when bench tested.
Relay With Ignition Off
-----------------
Wire - To Grnd Volt - To Grnd Ohms
87 0.0 1590
30 12.6 16 Meg
85 0.0 infinite
86 12.6 16 Meg
With Ignition ON
----------------
87 0.0 2.6 Mega ohms
30 12.6
85 0.0
86 12.6
5. The car does not even cough a little when start attempted. This is even
true when starter fluid is sprayed in the intake, (air filter assembly remove, MAF sensor disconnected.)
My thoughts.
1. It is not all all likely that the timing belt slips for the first time in a year
at low engine speed and load, or?
2. ECU Electronic #1 or Fuel Injection #2 could be bad.
3. What about alternator? Could a bad alternator explain this behavior. After I charge the
battery overnight, it seems to run out rather quickly.
Questions:
Can a good battery and a bad alternator/Voltage regulator produce a spark at the
plugs and then not have what it takes to start.
Could all five injectors become plugged suddenly?
Do I have to pull alternator to verify it is working?
What do you advise.
Many thanks
